I wish Gwen Shuttleworth had been teaching when I was a student back in the fifties. I didn’t know till I read her story of Joey the Snowman that math could be fun. It sure wasn’t fun for me in my twelve years of public schooling. Math was consistently my lowest mark over that dozen years and try as they might, my teachers could never get past the fog and I never got a grasp on the topic. I suspect if I started again with Joey, and continued the journey with Gwen, the results might be different. I think every parents would be doing their children a great service by starting them off with Joey the Snowman’s adventures with his 9 buttons.

David Goss wrote on reading Joey the Snowman:

Joey the Snowman

What a delightful little book! The illustrations are wonderful, colourful yet not too busy to distract from the buttons as the main focus.

I can see teachers and parents or other significant adults having great times with Joey and the children in their care. They can make their own paper snowman and manipulate different arrangements of buttons. This book discovers the properties of 9 but other numbers can be manipulated too, through extensions of the ideas. Younger children will learn the oral language of math while older students can be encouraged to write the equations. I just read it to my 4 and 7 year old granddaughters and it appealed to both at their own level of understanding.

Joey the Snowman is a story about a snowman who is looking for the perfect outfit for his school picture.

When I read Joey the snowman, I thought it was a great story to read to my grandkids. It’s a story that children can relate too. Children love winter and snowman, that’s why this book is interesting for young children. The words are at grade level. We enjoyed the pictures Joey, we had the impression that we will become alive like Frosty.

Being a former Math elementary mentor, I found that the book is appropriate for representing the introduction of the number 9. The way that the buttons are displayed on each page allowed the students to explore that math concept. I appreciated the way the author left a place for the student's imagination to wonder about what the next position of the buttons would be. The way the author presents the book allows the teachers to adapt it very well to their math lesson.

I love the clarity of the picture that it allowed the children to concentrate on the concept being taught.

Joey could also become an art project.

I hope you enjoy Joey the Snowman as much as I did, as he dresses for picture day with his colorful buttons. Exploring the number 9 has never been so much fun, as Joey uses simple math skills to get ready for school. If you have a child in preschool, or in the early grades then this book will help them explore simple addition or “Part, Part, Whole”. Joey will melt your heart with his twinkly eyes and his sweet smile, a read you will surely enjoy!!

Joey the Snowman is a beautifully written story designed to entertain and teach math skills to children ages 4-7. All educators, parents, grandparents and caregivers would find this book a useful tool for teaching the "facts of nine" to young children in a fun enjoyable way. I would highly recommend this book!
